Summary: In the USA, the FDA and Consumer Healthcare Products Association released voluntary recommendations for dosing directions and devices on product packages. For this report, the impact of those guidelines was examined on OTC liquid pediatric analgesics/antipyretics and cough/cold/allergy products. Of the 68 products considered, 91% of the dosing directions and 62% of the device Information adhered to all top tier recommendations. A dosing device was included with all the products and none used volumetric units that did not appear in the directions.

Summary: The authors indicated that triptans have been safely and effectively used for migraines for greater than 15 years. With that perspective, the impact of OTC availability was examined across 6 countries for third-party payers and society in general. For payers, given an estimated expenditure of 582 million Euros annually, the cost savings could reach 75 million.

Summary: Consumers’ confidence in their own skill level (obtaining information, selecting, using), and that of other people, in relation to OTC analgesics, was examined. Responders had more confidence in their own abilities than they did of others. They generally felt that pharmacies should have exclusive rights of sale. Those who were more confident in their own abilities were more apt to prefer greater product availability.

Summary: The HIWQ assesses patient desires and preferences for information in seven areas: diagnosis, treatment, lab tests, self-care, complementary/alternative medicine, psychosocial factors, and health-care providers. In this situation it was administered to 438 individuals, where it appeared that a desire for information exceeded any need
to participate in decision-making.

Summary: 200 elderly Czech residents provided information on ibuprofen, a preferred agent with the group. Just over half were not aware of any adverse effects with the agent, while 16% believed it to have no adverse effects at all.
